Description
The Nutcracker is one of the masterpieces of nineteenth-century ballet, an artistic testament to Marius Petipa, the famous choreographer who took charge of transporting the theatrical performance in Russia from a worrying stagnation to a bright new season; he drew the libretto inspired by the short story Nussknacker und Mausekönig by Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann.
Petipa asked Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, whom he had met in 1875 presenting Swan Lake in Moscow, to complete the project. Il Lago dei Cigni did not achieve much success, however the timbric refinement and rhythmic suggestion of the great musician did not escape, and in fact the second ballet, Sleeping Beauty turned out to be a triumph and Petipa convinced Tchaikovsky to try a third adventure with The Nutcracker.
Symphonic music concert by Orchestra Sinfonica Città di Roma, enriched by some danced pieces with original choreography by Minea De Mattia.
