Description

SAN NICOLA DE CALCARARIO Its structure was recuperated during the demolition performed in the years 1926-1929 to bring to light the four temples of the Area Sacra di Torre Argentina. Built around C.IX, its name derives from the fact that the area once welcomed lime-kilns. It was first located in the central nave of the temple A but it then expanded into the colonnade to the left. What one can admire today is the apse and the transept areas, which consist of pilasters made of perforated bricks, fragments of cosmatesque floor, the semi-ring shaped crypt, the high apse in perforated bricks and a lower apse with a masonry made of blocks of tuff. One can also find remamings of paintings. One should not miss out a marble altar dating back to C. XII, inside which saints’ relics were treasured in a glass cup. The church was rebuilt for a first time in 1611 and then in 1695 when Innocenzo XII entrusted it to the Padri Somaschi.
