Description

According to tradition, the church of San Girolamo della Carità was built on the area with the house where the Saint lived in 382. Given during C.XVI to a charity congregation, it is tied to the memory of San Filippo Neri, who founded his institute here and lived in a nearby house from 1551 to1583. The church was rebuilt by Domenico Castelly around 1655. The Baroque façade, in two orders, is by Carlo Rainaldi (1660). The interior has a Latin cross, with a single central nave and a rich wooden panelled ceiling. The splendid Spada chapel was designed by Borromini and represents and exceptional Baroque work of art, shining with its polychrome marbles with the walls scoring a marble inlay. By the high altar, by Carlo Rainaldi, one finds the "Comunione di San Girolamo", a copy by Camuccini of the original, by Domenichino, one can find at the Vatican.
