Description

The Museum was created as a testimony to the results obtained in the field by more than thirty Sapienza archaeological missions in fifteen different countries in the Near East, the Mediterranean and Africa over a period of more than fifty years. It possesses more than 4 thousand artifacts. The materials on display, when not copies, were acquired by the Museum before 1962, through the generous concession of the countries from which they came. The main purpose of the Museum is to disseminate the scientific results of archaeological research, to offer Sapienza students a valid training tool, and to publicize archaeological enterprises that have made Sapienza one of the major centers of excellence in archaeology in the world.

There is an Egyptian section, displaying finds from research and excavations carried out in Egypt and Sudan (statues and steles, fragments of sarcophagi, ceramics and wall paintings), and an Eastern section with materials (architectural pieces, numerous ceramic fragments) from Palestine, Syria, Tunisia. There are also materials from Sardinia, Sicily and Malta.
