Ponte Settimia Spizzichino

Typology: Bridges

Address

Address: Via Girolamo Benzoni
Zone: Quartiere Ostiense (Roma sud)

Description

The giant 'reticular bridge', designed by engineer Francesco Del Tosto and built by the Cimolai-Sios companies, is 240 metres long, 125 of which are suspended above the tracks of the Rome-Ostia Lido metro and railway line B. It connects the Garbatella district with the Ostiense district.

Characterised by two imposing steel arches painted white, it has two separate carriageways with three lanes each (two for cars and one for buses) and a cycle lane in each direction. As far as lighting is concerned, the work is illuminated externally by a beam of white light while internally, at the central tie rods, variable colour LEDs.

The inspiration for the mega-work comes from Spain and looks to bridges such as Seville's Ponte de la Barqueta, designed by Juan Arena and Marcos Pantaleon, and to the arched bridges of architect Santiago Calatrava, specifically Ponte Alameda in Valencia and Ponte di Alamillo in Seville.
