Address

Address: Lungotevere delle Navi
Zone: Quartiere Flaminio (Roma nord)

Description

The bridge was commissioned on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Unity of Italy in 1909. Its construction technique based on the Hennebique method allowed for the daring realization at that time of a single arch more than 100 m (111 yd) long and 20m (22 yd) wide. In 1911 after several fatal accidents during its construction, the bridge was finally crossed by the royal cortege for the inauguration of the International Art Exhibition. A well-known peaceful and spectacular beach with the bathing-huts of the “Polverini” was situated in the surroundings of the bridge during the late nineteenth century. The beach was also used by Fascist Regime as the "model waterside summer camp" where about 160 youngsters were hosted.
