Description

Built for Jacopo Cardelli in 1516-30, renovated by Giulio III del Monte in the mid-16th century, in 1561 it became the property of the Medici family of Florence (hence the name); in 1872 it became the residence of the Minister of Justice, then the seat of the State Attorney's Office.
The Dante Alighieri Society has had its headquarters here since 1926.
The main architectural renovation carried out by Bartolomeo Ammannati for the Del Monte family was accompanied by the decoration of some rooms by Prospero Fontana between 1553 and 1555. Of particular note are the frescoes in the Loggia on the ground floor, traditionally known as the Primaticcio.
The Camerino dei Continenti on the ground floor takes its name from the central panel that depicts three of the four parts of the world, Asia, Africa and Europe, characterised by attributes that make them similar in part to the descriptions in Cesare Ripa's Iconologia, and in part to the frescoes of a similar subject in the Sala del Mappamondo in the Palazzo Farnese in Caprarola (1574-75). Finally, the same decorative campaign included the magnificent carved ceilings of the loggia on the piano nobile, today known as the Sala del Granduca.
For a long time, the decoration of two other rooms on the second floor was erroneously attributed to Prospero Fontana, as well as to Primaticcio, but the work dates back to the period when Ferdinando de' Medici, by then owner of the palazzo, decided to make it his home.
Already in the service of the Medici since 1572, Jacopo Zucchi was commissioned the decoration of the ceiling of these two rooms, carried out in the years 1574 and 1575. The rooms in question are that of the Seasons and that of the Elements.
