Description

The core of the building dates back to 1586. Since 1633 it has been the seat of the Jesuit Congregation 'De Propaganda Fide' founded by Pope Gregory XV in 1622 with the task of evangelising the Third World. The palace, which is not adjacent to other buildings, is already referred to in ancient documents, both manuscripts and printed, as 'Isola del collegio'. Its lack of a unified architectural character is due to the different artists who worked on it, in different periods of time, completely independently and to meet different needs. Substantial changes and extensions were also made by Bernini and Borromini, whose last work is the Palazzo's elevation on Via di Propaganda, modulated by curvilinear elements.
The building incorporates the Church of the Three Kings, built by Borromini in 1660-66 to replace Bernini's oval church (1634).
