Description
The small marble sow (scrofa) that gives the name to the street is probably the fragment of an ancient bas-relief. Documents show that it was applied to the wall of the ex-convent of Sant’Agostino from 1445, today residence of the Avvocatura Generale dello Stato. Under Gregory the Thirteenth Boncompagni (1572-1585) the sow was made into a fountain by simply placing a small pond below the animal that poured water from its mouth. In 1873 due to a widening of the street the small pond was moved to Via dei Portoghesi, where it stands today, while the bas-relief remained without water in its original position. A modern plate commemorates its ancient function as a fountain.
