Description
The fountain designed and built in 1865 by Andrea Busiri Vici, who is responsible for the entire arrangement of the large semicircular square opened by Pious the Ninth Mastai Ferretti (1846-1878) in front of the Manifattura di tabacchi (Tobacco Manufacturing) building, a monopoly that gave the State of the Church large financial resources. The fountain was fed by the waterfrom the “fontanone del Gianicolo”. It consists of an elevated octagonal pool, from the centre of which rise two basins one on top of the other, the lower one supported by four dauphins with the tails intertwined and the upper one by four putti with a mermaid’s tail.
