The fountain consists of a sea group (a daulphin, three tritons and a big octopus) built around 1910 by the Sicilian sculpture Mario Rutelli for the Fountain of the Naiads in Piazza Esedra. It was not very much appreciated by the people that ironically calledit “fritto misto” (mixed fry), so the statues were soon replaced with the group of Glaucus that still stands out at the centre of the huge pond in Piazza della Repubblica. Instead the group that was refused was placed in the gardens of Piazza Vittorio at the centre of a modest pond, where it currently stands, not far from the imposing ruins of the ancient fountain of the Acqua Giulia better known as the “Trofei di Mario” (Mario’s Trophies).
