Description

The Gothic Hall is located on the first floor of the Main Tower. It was the most prestigious room in the cardinal's palace built by Stefano Conti. This place hosted feasts and receptions and was used as a court of law.
A glorious example of Gothic-style architecture, quite exceptional in the city of Rome, the Gothic Hall features an extraordinary cycle of paintings - a thirteen-century masterpiece - on its walls. The lively polychrome frescoes are a testament to a prolific time for Rome's painting, with the Byzantine tradition blending in with a refined revival of ancient classics and the new Gothic culture. Discovered in 1995, these beautiful decorations had been hiding for centuries under successive layers of color. Only through long restoration work by Italy's Superintendence for archaeological heritage was it possible to bring them back to the surface.
