Description

Situated close to the border between the park of Castel Fusano and the estate of Castel Proziano, the complex was excavated in 1713. It was identified as the villa owned in this area by Plinio il Giovane (61-114 AD), described in a letter written by him to his friend Gallo. There are three construction phases : the first one is the giulio-claudia age, the second one coincides with the enlargement of the villa between the end of the I century and the beginning of the II century AD, while the third one is between the Hadrian age (117-138 AD) and the Antonino Pio age (138-161). The most striking and well preserved part of the villa, at present, more or less 600 metres away from the sea, belongs to the quadriportico that can be approached through a lateritious arch. The perisityle, constituted by two circles of columns, delimited the garden with in the centre a tub partly restored. On the south side of the quadriportico there is the thermal area where in the first room there is a valuable black and white mosaic representing Nettuno on a cart drawn by two hippocampus. There is a circular tub that was used as a hot water tub. On the east side of the quadriportico, there are the impressive ruins of a building identified as a tower.
