Description
During the renovation work carried out by the Alda Fendi Foundation, large portions of the marble flooring in antique yellow, pavonazzetto and African, belonging to the Basilica Ulpia, named after the emperor Trajan, built in the Forum of Trajan between 106 and 113, came to light. It closed the short end of the Forum of Trajan. The basilica, raised three steps above the square, was the largest built in Rome; the façade was articulated in three avant-corps that corresponded to as many entrances: the central one with four columns on the front, the side ones with two columns. The interior was divided into five naves, the central one being the largest of the others, separated by tall granite and cipolin marble columns, with a frieze depicting Victories in the act of sacrificing bulls; on the short sides were two exedras. In the basilica justice was administered and commercial activities took place.
