Description
The Emperor Trajan built the aqueduct with the same name in 109 AD, transporting the water from some sources near Vicarello on the Bracciano lake.
The aqueduct system provided water to Trastevere, as confirmed by the presence of a large number of fistulae found in Vigna Lais, near Porta San Pancrazio, where the castle at the end of the aqueduct was situated. Not far away at Villa Spada a monumental exhibition was erected. The aqueduct was running underground for a long distance, but at the altitude of Villa Pamphilj it was rising up on arches, part of which have been incorporated into the boundary wall of the villa. In 1612 Pope Paul V restored and in part modified the ruined Roman aqueduct and built the famous Gianicolo exhibition. The aqueduct can still be seen in places along the Via Aurelia, both at Villa Pamphilj and beyond Via Leone XIII, turning north into Via del Casale di San Pio V.
